I am originally from Milwaukee, (go Packers!) and now live near the Arenal Volcano area. It is safe to say that with my first āholaā in kindergarten, I knew I was destined to live abroad.
My Costa Rican experience over the last five years has cultivated my love for Costa Rican cultures and opened my eyes to the beauty of the country.
I came to Costa Rica to manage two resort properties and I was the director of finance which now helps me understand the travel market here in Costa Rica and bring the best value to your travels!
By Harold Gamboa PhotographyĀ Costa Rica is a place like no other, with its pristine beaches, jungles, volcanoes, and waterfalls. It's the kind of destination that leaves a mark on your heartāand what better way to remember it than with a professional photo session?Whether you're here for a family vacation, a trip with friends, or to celebrate a special moment like an engagement or elopement, capturing those experiences through photos is something no souvenir can ever replace.Ā Best Places for Photo Sessions in Costa RicaCosta Rica offers countless settings that provide the perfect backdrop for unforgettable photos. It all comes down to what you prefer!Flamingo Beach, GuanacasteFlamingo Beach is known for its white sand and clear blue waters, making it an ideal location for any photo session. For more privacy, head to the far side of the beach, where fewer tourists gather, allowing for uninterrupted shots. The best lighting is during sunrise or sunset. Accessibility is good, with paved roads leading to the area and various accommodations nearby. In case of the unexpected, consider Potrero Beach as a backup, just a short drive away.Nosara, GuanacasteNosara is a popular destination for surfers, wellness enthusiasts, and families. Its two main beaches, Playa Guiones and Playa Pelada, offer scenic backdrops for photo sessions. Playa Guiones is vast and often less crowded at sunrise, providing an excellent setting for peaceful, golden-hour shots. Playa Pelada offers more seclusion, especially on its southern end. The area is generally accessible by road, though some paths may require a 4x4 vehicle. If conditions arenāt ideal, nearby Playa Ostional is a great alternative.Monteverde Cloud ForestFor those looking for a magical and adventurous setting, Monteverde Cloud Forest offers hanging bridges, green trails, and misty canopies. The cloud forest has limited sunlight, so mid-morning and early afternoon are best for photography. Due to the humid conditions, bringing weather-resistant gear is advisable. Privacy varies depending on the locationāsome trails can be busy, while others, like the Santa Elena Reserve, are quieter. If weather disrupts plans, consider the Butterfly Garden or Orchid Garden in Monteverde as indoor backup options.Santa Teresa, PuntarenasSanta Teresaās white-sand beaches, sunsets, and surf culture create a stunning backdrop for any photo session. The beaches can be crowded, so for more privacy, visit Playa Hermosa (not to be confused with the one in Guanacaste), just a short drive away. The town is accessible but has some unpaved roads, making a 4x4 vehicle a good option.Drake Bay, Osa PeninsulaFor a secluded and untouched backdrop, Drake Bay on the Osa Peninsula is perfect. The area offers quiet beaches and dense jungle, making it ideal for nature lovers and those seeking privacy. The best lighting is early in the morning, as the sunlight filters through the trees and onto the coastline. Access requires either a boat or a rugged drive, so planning ahead is essential. Youāll find plenty of secluded spots like Playa San Josecito.Manuel Antonio and Jacó BeachManuel Antonio and Jacó are among Costa Ricaās most accessible photo session places, thanks to well-paved roads and proximity to San JosĆ©. Manuel Antonio provides greenery and scenic beaches, though it can be crowdedāvisiting early morning on weekdays ensures a more private setting. Jacó Beach is ideal for urban-style beach photos, with plenty of open space and easy access. For backup options, nearby Playa Herradura or Playa Hermosa (near Jacó) offer a quieter setting.Hiring Process for a Professional Photoshoot in Costa RicaĀ By Harold Gamboa PhotographyĀ If youāre traveling with tour operators like us, you can ask for recommendations on trusted photographers. Alternatively, you can find photographers through their websites and social media pages, where youāll typically find complete information and direct contact via email. The booking process is usually straightforwardāchoosing a date and time for the session. Most photographers require a deposit to secure the date, usually $100 or a percentage of the total session cost. Some photographers also provide questionnaires to better understand the clientās vision for their photos.Typical Price RangesPricing varies depending on the location and the photographerās experience, but this is the usual range.$300ā$400 for a 30-minute session$400ā$700 for a one-hour sessionRecommended Booking Platforms & ResourcesHotel concierge servicesTravel agenciesTour operatorsBooking TimelineHigh season (DecemberāApril): Book at least two to four months in advance.Low season (MayāNovember): A minimum of three to four weeks is usually enough.Payment Structures & General ConsiderationsMost photographers require a 10ā30% deposit to secure the date, usually via PayPal. The remaining balance is usually paid on the day of the session via an agreed platform or method. Confirm all this ahead of time to avoid unnecessary hiccups in the process. Before hiring a photographer, itās important to ensure they are familiar with the area and can recommend the best times for your session. Reviewing their portfolio is also key to making sure their style matches your preferences. Some photographers specialize in portrait photography, while others focus on lifestyle photography. Some prefer bright, studio-like lighting in natural settings, while others have a more naturalistic approach.Keep in MindInsurance & Equipment: Some professional photographers carry liability insurance and backup equipment.Language: Many photographers in Costa Rica speak English and Spanish, but communication preferences should be confirmed in advance.Transportation: If your session is in a remote area, ask if the photographer can meet you at your location or if they offer transportation assistance. Some photographers may charge additional fees for travel to remote locations.Planning a Professional Photoshoot SessionĀ By Harold Gamboa PhotographyĀ For your photo session, we recommend choosing comfortable clothing that blends well with the natural surroundings. Neutral colors like beige, gray, brown, and white are great choices for any occasion. Flowing dresses that move naturally look amazing in photos. Try to avoid bold patterns and branded logos for a timeless look. Pastel tones like soft blues and pinks also work beautifully. Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel confident, and come with a positive attitudeāhaving fun during the session is the best way to create beautiful memories of your trip!Costa Rica is a tropical paradise, and if you're visiting during the rainy season, you might experience occasional showers. But after all, it is the rainforest! This is why planning your session with a professional who can recommend the best time of day is key.Additional Session DetailsStandard Session Durations & Packages: Most photographers offer 30-minute, one-hour, or extended sessions.Photo Delivery Timeframes: Typically two to four weeks after the session.Rights & Usage Terms: Some photographers provide full rights to the images, while others may retain usage rights for promotional purposes.Cancellation & Weather Policies: Most photographers offer rescheduling options in case of rain or unforeseen circumstances.Group Size Limitations: Additional fees may apply for larger groups.Capture Your Journey in Costa RicaA professional photoshoot in Costa Rica is more than just taking picturesāitās about capturing the magic of your experience in one of the worldās most breathtaking destinations. With the right photographer and a little planning, youāll walk away with stunning images that will allow you to relive your adventure for years to come. She booked a 9 day trip for my fiancĆ© and I. We loved all the activities she picked for us. Zip lining, hiking in the dark, white water rafting (our favorite), scuba diving. We liked the 3 hotels we stayed out and especially loved Nayara Springs. Everyone at Nayara Springs was amazing hands down! They knew our names and made our stay special since we got engaged while we were staying there. Jessica and my fiancĆ© even planned stuff behind my back to surprise me and make the trip unforgettable. Overall everyone in Costa Rica was very friendly. Pura Vida!āĀ Ā Ā Expert AdviceJessica Luecke, our travel consultant and wedding specialist, has a wealth of tips and secrets to share with you. Whether you're looking for a secluded beach, a breathtaking mountain view, or a romantic hot springs proposal, Jessica has got you covered. Read what she has to say below:Ā I've had the pleasure of being a part of all different styles of engagements, elopements and weddings here in Costa Rica. There are endless venues to begin your love story; rainforests, waterfalls, powdery beaches surrounded by wildlife.Ā Ā Engagements are my personal favorites because so many of them are a surprise! Small, intimate and full of joy. I have to admit that some of my travelers have popped the question in some of the most unique and special ways here in Costa Rica. You can't go wrong with the scenery here, either!Ā Ā The country is full of romantic destinations that are perfect for popping the question and making a memorable proposal. Take them to a trip around Corcovado National Park, spend an evening on a pristine beach in Manuel Antonio, or see how many species of birds you can spot on a guided bird watching tour at one of Costa Ricaās national parks. Whatever you're looking for, we have it! See also our picks for the most romantic getaways here.Ā Ā Ā Weddings in ParadiseCosta Rica is an amazing option for anyone looking to tie the knot in a one-of-a-kind way! LikeĀ any wedding, these require planning and logistics - that's where I come in! People will often ask what kind of packages we have for weddings and elopements here in Costa Rica. The truth is, similar to any vacation planning, it varies. Each couple wantsĀ something a little bit different and prices will depend on what the special day looks like for you! On average, just the wedding/ ceremony portion can start around $1,500 - $2,500. This depends on your decor, florals, venue, music choice, symbolic vs legal ceremony and what kind of extras you'd like. A destinationĀ wedding, no matter the size, should be stress free, personal and meaningful to you.Ā Ā Ā Here To Help! Our concept of engagement, elopement and wedding planning is similar to that of vacation planning; we help you build and create your special day from scratch, based on what is mostĀ important and special to you and your partner. We even help you out hiring an amazing photographer for that special day. There is no "mold" or preset package we can send you as everyone has their own dreams, expectations and budget.Ā Ā Feel free to reach out to me if you're looking to propose on your next Costa Rican adventure, or if you're planning to say the big "I do" and plan a destination wedding!Ā Ā Ā FAQsWhat are the top elopement destinations in Costa Rica? The main two locations are the rainforest/ volcano area and the beach. Some popular locations in the rainforest are the La Fortuna Waterfall, The Springs Resort & Spa, and Tabacon hot springs (for a small and intimate ceremony). For the beaches, the Guanacaste region is most popular due to the all-inclusive and beach front properties.Ā What is the best engagement spot? This will depend if you're looking for a popular lookout or destination, or if you want something private and intimate. However, some of the most popular places are the La Paz waterfall gardens, sunset catamaran boat rides and at the end of an adventure (rafting, rappelling, zip lining, etc).Ā What if it rains? It might! Costa Rica is primarily rainforest and it can rain almost any time of the year. We just have to go with the flow.Ā What is the best time of the year to get married in Costa Rica? If you're looking for the best weather, the best time to get married in Costa Rica is from December - April.Ā If I want to be surrounded by wildlife, where should we get married? Manuel Antonio! This part of Costa Rica has abundant wildlife and it's where we like to say "the rainforest meets the ocean" so here you can feel like you're in the heart of the rainforest, yet have a beautiful ocean view in front of you as well. One of our favorite spots in this area is the lookout deck at Costa Verde (important to note that they do not do group reservations in the summer season).Ā Ā Ā About the AuthorJessica LueckeTravel Consultant - Wedding & Group Specialist at Costa Rican VacationsI am originally from Milwaukee, (go Packers!) and now live near the Arenal Volcano area.
